If you’ve caught a Live or even a DJ set of mine in the last 12 months, chances are you’ve heard me slip in some Sasha, Chicane, Delirium or even one of my unreleased tunes which lends heavily from that prime time in emotional trance music - It usually goes down well if exercised sparingly.
Sometimes it might seem like I’m making an ironic choice when I play those kind of tunes out, this is totally not the case. I like emotional dance music, it’s part of my musical genetic makeup. Songs like “The Age of Love” and “Halcyon & On & On” are a big influence on what I set out to do with this project, not entirely, but in part for sure.
I know that everyone likes Pop music, gone are the days of pledging allegiance to the underground, the days of utter contempt for the ‘machine’, music and arts fans understand and appreciate the need for top 40 pop and its place in our cultural landscape.
But sometimes when I’m discussing the pop music that I like with others it becomes clear that this pop music that I like is the wrong pop music. Taylor Swift (up until about 6 months ago) is okay to enjoy, Beyoncé is okay to enjoy, but Calvin Harris is not okay to enjoy, because EDM.
Calvin Harris has hit a nerve with me, pretty much every single the dude has released (even the early stuff) lands in the same sweet spot that “Sweetness and Light” or “Seven Ways” land. I’m grateful that some of his songs are able to connect in the way that these classic mainstream crossover trance tracks did for me back when I was a prepubescent kid - keeps me feeling young.
Anyway. I got super indulgent this week and remixed his latest single that he recorded with Rihanna. “This is What You Came For” is definitely my favourite pop song of this year and I’m still not tired of hearing it (which is rare for me w/r/t top 40 pop music).
I wanted this remix to be super emotional, full of energy and try to find some middle ground between Calvin Harris circa 2016 and Age Of Love circa 1992… And I dunno… A jungle party circa 1995.
More non-Calvin Harris stuff coming eventually…
